Fabric count, stitch size, and thread coverage

Connect Aida or evenweave count to the physical size of a chart, then choose thread strands for the coverage and detail you want.

Count describes spacing

For Aida, count commonly states the number of stitch positions across 25.4 cm. A higher count packs more positions into that distance, so each chart cell becomes physically smaller. Evenweave count describes fabric threads; a stitch worked over two threads on 28-count evenweave has approximately the same scale as one square on 14-count Aida. Check whether a source counts holes, threads, or stitch positions before converting.

A chart has a physical size

Divide chart cells by stitch positions per unit. A 140-cell-wide design on 14-count Aida is 25.4 cm wide before margins. Always add handling and finishing allowance around the design; the chart dimensions are not the cut-fabric dimensions.

Coverage is a design decision

More strands cover more ground but increase bulk and friction. Dark thread on light ground can reveal more fabric than a mid-value colour. Make a small sample with the actual thread, count, and needle. A tapestry needle should pass through existing holes without enlarging them unnecessarily.
