Before you start
Use smooth, light yarn and a small sample that matches the lesson’s flat or circular construction. Mark the right side and record the starting stitch count. Follow the pattern’s own stitch key.
How to do it
- Swatch flat and circular knitting separately — Match the project’s knitting direction and stitch rhythm. Alternating knit and purl rows can produce a different gauge from knitting every round.
- Join a round without twisting — Arrange the cast-on edge consistently around the needle before joining. Check the fabric edge itself, not only the flexible cable.
- Plan hat circumference and ease — Use the intended head measurement and the pattern’s ease with a finished circular sample. Brim stretch and crown construction remain separate checks.
- Distribute crown decreases — Choose a reviewed crown structure and map each decrease column. Calculate the count after every decrease round, then check the resulting height against row gauge.

A body count of 96 fits eight crown sectors of 12. Confirm the chosen finished circumference from the round swatch and reserve the crown’s measured depth before knitting the straight body.
