Why stockinette curls and balanced structures behave differently

Connect loop geometry to edge curl, rib contraction, borders, and better finishing decisions.

Loops store direction

A knitted loop bends yarn through a three-dimensional path. In stockinette, all loops face the same way, so the two faces do not balance each other's bending tendency. With no neighbouring fabric beyond an edge, that imbalance becomes visible: side edges tend to turn one way while cast-on and bound-off edges turn the other. Research models connect this macroscopic curl to yarn elasticity and loop geometry.

Structure changes the balance

Garter stitch alternates the face presented by successive rows, while rib alternates knit and purl columns. Those arrangements balance opposing tendencies more effectively than stockinette. Rib also draws in across its width because neighbouring columns move forward and backward. Neither structure is magically dimensionless: yarn, density, washing, and border proportions still matter.

Design before trying to block it away

Blocking can set dimensions and relax a fabric, but it does not permanently remove a strong structural imbalance from every fibre. If a flat edge matters, add a sufficiently deep balanced border, seam the edge, line it, or choose a balanced main structure. Swatch the border with the body because a narrow border may be overpowered by a large stockinette field.
