Counted work places stitches using fabric threads or a grid; surface work follows transferred outlines. Choose the method before choosing the ground.

Have the complete instructions, a short list of unfamiliar actions and the materials for a trial. Separate the trial from the final project.

Try one ten-by-ten cross-stitch motif and one traced leaf on separate scraps. Compare counting, marking and stitch freedom before selecting a first project.
