Before you start
Use smooth, light yarn and a small sample that matches the lesson’s flat or circular construction. Mark the right side and record the starting stitch count. Follow the pattern’s own stitch key.
How to do it
- For a knit-side wrap and turn: keep yarn behind, slip the next stitch purlwise, bring yarn forward between the tips, return the slipped stitch, then take yarn back and turn. For a purl-side turn, reverse front and back yarn positions. The wrapped stitch is still one stitch.
- When a later full row reaches the wrap, lift it onto the left needle and work it together with its stitch: knit on the knit face, purl on the purl face. The wrap is not an extra stitch. Check the linked close-ups for the pickup direction, especially when resolving a purl-side wrap from the knit side.
Try this example
On 20 stitches, turn first with four stitches unworked, then with eight unworked. Resolve both turns as the chosen method specifies and check for holes before using shaping in a garment.
Check your result
- Count live stitches, trace one column and inspect both faces. Compare the relaxed edge with the middle of the sample before repeating the operation on a project.
- Stitch names and mounts vary between knitting styles. Follow the required fabric structure and pattern key rather than assuming every front loop is the correct entry point.
