Knitting needle forms: straight, circular, and double-pointed

Construction changes handling

Straight needles hold stitches on rigid shafts and are most comfortable for modest flat pieces. Circular needles join two tips with a flexible cable; they can work in the round, but also spread the weight of a wide flat piece across the cable. Double-pointed needles have a point at each end and divide a small circumference across several needles.

Diameter is the comparable size

Letter and number systems vary by market and manufacturer. The millimetre measurement describes the tool diameter directly, so it is the safest value to compare. A recommended needle is a starting point: yarn, stitch pattern, individual tension, and finishing determine the actual fabric.

Tips and materials change feel

A sharper taper can enter tight or complex stitches more easily; a rounder point is gentler with loosely spun yarn. Smooth metal lets stitches travel quickly. Wood and bamboo usually provide more grip. Cable flexibility and joins matter as much as tip material on circular needles.
