Plan colors and stitched details on a crochet figure

Before you start

Confirm whether the instructions use US or UK terms. On a smooth-yarn sample, mark the first and last stitch and note whether the turning chain counts.

How to do it

1. Place deliberate color changes — For many basic stitches, completing the last pull-through with the next color prepares the next stitch. Confirm the pattern’s method and secure both ends.
2. Plan crocheted stripes and round transitions — Decide whether stripe boundaries follow rows, joined rounds or a spiral. A spiral transition naturally starts at a different height from its neighbor.
3. Position sculptural parts — Mark paired attachment points against a stable center line before sewing. Check the silhouette from several directions and follow the project’s attachment instructions.
4. Support stretchy embroidery grounds — Stabilize the ground at its intended relaxed size and test useful stretch after stitching. Dense embroidery may locally restrict movement even when the ground is elastic.

Try this example

Mark the front center and two paired detail positions on a practice body. Test the stitched face on spare dense fabric, then confirm access for securing thread ends before final assembly.

Check your result

• Count stitch tops separately from chain spaces and compare successive row or round totals. Lay the sample down without stretching it to inspect the shape.
• A symbol or familiar stitch name does not supply a complete construction. Use the project’s own counts, turning rules and joining instructions.
