Why wool felts: moisture, movement, scales, and control

Understand why untreated wool can densify irreversibly—and how fibre treatment changes the risk.

Felting is fibre migration that becomes locked

Wool's outer cuticle has overlapping scales and directional friction. With moisture, suitable temperature, and mechanical action, fibres move relative to one another. Their scales encourage movement more easily in one direction than the other, so repeated movement works fibres deeper into the assembly. The fabric becomes denser and smaller; once strongly interlocked, the change is not simply reversible stretching.

Heat alone is not the whole explanation

A warm wool item can remain stable when it is supported and undisturbed, while agitation and changing wet conditions accelerate migration. Sudden temperature changes may contribute, but rubbing, tumbling, and repeated handling are central risks. Loose, hairy, low-twist constructions expose mobile fibre ends and may felt readily; fibre diameter, scale structure, yarn construction, and fabric density all affect the outcome.

Treatment and intention matter

Machine-washable wool is processed to reduce scale-driven directional friction, commonly by modifying or coating the fibre surface. That changes felting behaviour, but the label's care instructions still govern the actual yarn. For ordinary projects, wash a finished swatch using the intended method before committing. For intentional fulling or felting, measure before and after, work gradually, and stop before details disappear: shrinkage can differ by direction and project.
