Before you start
Use this three-round diagram to practise reading a square from the centre outward. The symbols show chains and US double crochet, called treble crochet in UK terminology.

Try one square
- Copy the template and inspect the legend. Trace each round, finding all four corners before you begin; check the guide for starting and joining methods.
- Work a practice square, keeping the corner spaces distinct from the sides. Lay it flat after each round and check that the corners line up.
- Finish the ends, wash as the yarn label directs and dry flat. Measure the square and a trial join, then record the space each joined motif occupies.
Worked example
If a washed square including its share of the join occupies 10 cm, a 30 cm by 40 cm panel uses 3 by 4 squares: 12 in total. Borders and different joins change the finished dimensions. Use your measured values in the layout planner.
