Choose contrasting fill densities and map their boundaries and return paths before starting.

## Before you start

Have the chart key, chart width and height, fabric thread count and threads crossed by each stitch. Keep floss strands separate from fabric threads.

## How to do it

1. **Plan blackwork repeats and paths** — Map the fill repeat, boundaries and return routes before stitching. A reversible double-running route needs explicit planning; not every blackwork design is reversible.
2. **Plan a removable grid** — Match fabric grid boundaries to chart boundaries and test removal. A grid assists counting but can spread errors if its first interval is wrong.
3. **Plan travel paths on the reverse** — Balance efficient travel with visibility, tension and snagging. A short hidden route may work well; a dark strand across unstitched light ground may show through.
4. **Assess light-dark contrast** — Value contrast helps neighboring shapes remain distinguishable. Similar hue names do not reveal whether two stitched areas will merge at viewing distance.

## Try this example

Place three equal squares on the chart with light, medium and dense fills. Trace one complete repeat and its return in each, then sample the boundary so partial motifs end deliberately.

## Check your result

- Count from two independent reference points before filling a large area. Verify the outer stitched dimensions on the actual ground; include finishing fabric separately.
- Changing fabric count changes physical size, not chart complexity. Fractional stitches, mixed scales and non-square grounds need explicit chart instructions.
