Establish common placement references and decide thread travel before filling separate islands.

## Before you start

Have the chart key, chart width and height, fabric thread count and threads crossed by each stitch. Keep floss strands separate from fabric threads.

## How to do it

1. **Choose a center or corner start** — A center start uses matched chart and fabric centers; a corner start needs measured margins and verified outer dimensions. Neither removes the need to check placement.
2. **Plan a removable grid** — Match fabric grid boundaries to chart boundaries and test removal. A grid assists counting but can spread errors if its first interval is wrong.
3. **Track scattered colors** — Work from checked landmarks and record completed stitches without hiding unworked symbols. Small color islands need deliberate starts and travel paths.
4. **Plan travel paths on the reverse** — Balance efficient travel with visibility, tension and snagging. A short hidden route may work well; a dark strand across unstitched light ground may show through.

## Try this example

Place three motifs relative to a basted center line, checking distances in fabric threads from two directions. Test dark travel threads behind the unstitched linen and restart separately where they show.

## Check your result

- Count from two independent reference points before filling a large area. Verify the outer stitched dimensions on the actual ground; include finishing fabric separately.
- Changing fabric count changes physical size, not chart complexity. Fractional stitches, mixed scales and non-square grounds need explicit chart instructions.
