Separate chart area from actual stitched count and time a representative color-changing section.

## Before you start

Have the chart key, chart width and height, fabric thread count and threads crossed by each stitch. Keep floss strands separate from fabric threads.

## How to do it

1. **Read the counted-chart key** — A symbol identifies the thread and stitch treatment assigned by that chart. Similar colors or symbols in another chart do not imply the same assignment.
2. **Track scattered colors** — Work from checked landmarks and record completed stitches without hiding unworked symbols. Small color islands need deliberate starts and travel paths.
3. **Estimate floss from a stitched sample** — Measure the thread actually consumed by a known stitch count, including representative starts and finishes. Use matching ground, strands and stitch structure.
4. **Include assembly and finishing time** — Separate active making, active finishing and passive drying time. A percentage buffer cannot represent an overnight drying dependency by itself.

## Try this example

A fully covered 100 × 80 chart contains 8,000 crosses. At a measured 100 crosses per 30 active minutes, the base is 2,400 minutes before extra counting, starts, backstitch and finishing.

## Check your result

- Count from two independent reference points before filling a large area. Verify the outer stitched dimensions on the actual ground; include finishing fabric separately.
- Changing fabric count changes physical size, not chart complexity. Fractional stitches, mixed scales and non-square grounds need explicit chart instructions.

## [Sampled project-time estimator](https://threadcabin.com/tools/project-time-estimator)

Scale a timed sample into a realistic working estimate with your own allowance.

Time a representative count of the same units used for the target: stitches, rows or motifs. Include assembly separately if the sample omits it. Avoid adding breaks twice. The central estimate and range support scheduling; they are not a deadline guarantee or an assessment of skill.

Observed minutes per unit are scaled to the target, selected complexity factor, and break allowance. The result shows a ±15% planning band for ordinary pace variation. Use comparable sample and project units; include breaks in the sample or allowance, but not both.

- Completed stitches, rows, or motifs: 100
- Minutes spent: 30 min
- Target stitches, rows, or motifs: 8000
- Break and complexity allowance: 0 %
- Project complexity: Similar to the sample
