Count each symbol and apply consumption from comparable stitching before rounding skeins per color.

## Before you start

Have the chart key, chart width and height, fabric thread count and threads crossed by each stitch. Keep floss strands separate from fabric threads.

## How to do it

1. **Read the counted-chart key** — A symbol identifies the thread and stitch treatment assigned by that chart. Similar colors or symbols in another chart do not imply the same assignment.
2. **Estimate floss from a stitched sample** — Measure the thread actually consumed by a known stitch count, including representative starts and finishes. Use matching ground, strands and stitch structure.
3. **Convert working strands to skeins** — For divisible floss, convert working-bundle length into single-strand length before dividing by the skein’s total strand length. Include cutting loss separately.
4. **Budget every embroidery color** — Estimate stitch quantity and consumption by color, then round each color to whole packages. Large total leftovers do not replace a missing specific shade.

## Try this example

A sampler contains 600 red and 200 blue crosses. If each color sample uses 80 cm per 100 stitches in a two-strand bundle, base requirements are 4.8 m red and 1.6 m blue bundles.

## Check your result

- Count from two independent reference points before filling a large area. Verify the outer stitched dimensions on the actual ground; include finishing fabric separately.
- Changing fabric count changes physical size, not chart complexity. Fractional stitches, mixed scales and non-square grounds need explicit chart instructions.

## [Floss usage sampler](https://threadcabin.com/tools/floss-usage-sampler)

Extrapolate skeins from a small sample stitched with your own fabric and tension.

Stitch a counted sample with the intended ground and strand count. Enter the length of the working cut consumed, not that length multiplied by its strands; the tool multiplies strands once. Results use single-strand length before conversion to whole skeins. Sample each color separately.

The sampled cut length is multiplied by strands used, stitch-count ratio, and wastage allowance, then compared with the brand's strand and skein length. The ±20% range exposes uncertainty from stitch density, tails, and technique; it is not guaranteed coverage.

- Stitches completed: 100
- Total length cut before separating: 80 cm
- Target stitches: 600
- Strands used together: 2
- Extra allowance: 0 %
- Length of each full strand: 8 m
- Strands in a full skein: 6
