## Before you start

Confirm whether the instructions use US or UK terms. On a smooth-yarn sample, mark the first and last stitch and note whether the turning chain counts.

## How to do it

1. **Plan broomstick-lace groups** — Long loops are collected on a support and worked in groups. Use a loop count divisible by the chosen group size and sample the return stitch count.
2. **Make a representative crochet swatch** — Sample the actual stitch pattern, working direction and finishing method. A plain-stitch square cannot establish the gauge of a textured or mesh project.
3. **Measure a foundation chain** — A chain alone does not establish the finished width. Work several rows into it and measure the relaxed fabric instead.
4. **Estimate yarn from a crochet rectangle** — Scale the sample’s yarn use by area only when the project uses the same structure and finishing. Budget borders and denser sections separately.

## Try this example

A 25-loop sample makes five groups of five. If its finished width is 15 cm, doubling to ten groups suggests 30 cm only with the same edge treatment and measured gauge.

## Check your result

- Count stitch tops separately from chain spaces and compare successive row or round totals. Lay the sample down without stretching it to inspect the shape.
- A symbol or familiar stitch name does not supply a complete construction. Use the project’s own counts, turning rules and joining instructions.
