## Before you start

Confirm whether the instructions use US or UK terms. On a smooth-yarn sample, mark the first and last stitch and note whether the turning chain counts.

## How to do it

1. **Understand Tunisian passes** — A basic Tunisian row includes a forward pass collecting loops and a return pass working them off. Count the edge loops as the selected stitch method specifies.
2. **Manage Tunisian edges and curl** — Check both edge insertions and sample curl after finishing. Hook size, stitch structure and a planned border can affect behavior, but blocking alone may not remove structural curl.
3. **Make a representative crochet swatch** — Sample the actual stitch pattern, working direction and finishing method. A plain-stitch square cannot establish the gauge of a textured or mesh project.
4. **Estimate yarn from a crochet rectangle** — Scale the sample’s yarn use by area only when the project uses the same structure and finishing. Budget borders and denser sections separately.

## Try this example

Make a strip with both planned selvedges and the proposed border. If it still rolls tightly after resting, revise the stitch or edge before multiplying its width into a full scarf.

## Check your result

- Count stitch tops separately from chain spaces and compare successive row or round totals. Lay the sample down without stretching it to inspect the shape.
- A symbol or familiar stitch name does not supply a complete construction. Use the project’s own counts, turning rules and joining instructions.
