Test the transition from flat base to upright walls using the chosen yarn and stitch.

## Before you start

Confirm whether the instructions use US or UK terms. On a smooth-yarn sample, mark the first and last stitch and note whether the turning chain counts.

## How to do it

1. **Plan a flat crochet circle** — Use an increase schedule tested for the actual stitch height. A fixed number of increases is not universal across stitches, gauge and yarn.
2. **Diagnose cupping and ruffles** — Too little circumference can cup; excess circumference can ruffle. First check counts, stitch height and tension against the intended construction.
3. **Sample baskets and rugs** — Stiffness, abrasion and care matter independently of appearance. Test the actual yarn, joining method and intended contact surface before scaling up.
4. **Finish assembled crochet** — Support the whole wet piece and align seams without forcing motifs beyond their sampled dimensions. Check the relaxed dry size after removing pins.

## Try this example

Make a 10 cm base and several wall rounds. Let it stand unsupported with the intended light contents; wall collapse calls for a material or construction review before a larger basket.

## Check your result

- Count stitch tops separately from chain spaces and compare successive row or round totals. Lay the sample down without stretching it to inspect the shape.
- A symbol or familiar stitch name does not supply a complete construction. Use the project’s own counts, turning rules and joining instructions.
