Add length within a permitted section without silently changing shaping or joining edges.

## Before you start

Gather the measurements, counts or timing sample needed below. Record their units and whether they describe a sample, the whole project or one purchased package. Use a finished sample when dimensions or material use depend on fabric structure.

## How to do it

1. **Calculate crochet rows for a height** — Use finished row gauge and preserve complete vertical repeats. Include any border height separately from the main fabric.
2. **Adapt crochet shaping within a pattern** — Keep the original start and end counts and identify the section that may change. Neckline and sleeve-cap joins must still match their partner edges.
3. **Read crochet garment construction** — Trace the work direction, panel boundaries and joining edges on the schematic. Size selection needs finished dimensions and ease as well as gauge.
4. **Estimate yarn from a crochet rectangle** — Scale the sample’s yarn use by area only when the project uses the same structure and finishing. Budget borders and denser sections separately.

## Try this example

At 15 rows per 10 cm, 4 cm adds six rows. If the stitch pattern repeats over four rows, compare an allowed four- or eight-row adjustment and its resulting length with the wearer’s needs.

## Check your result

- Recheck the inputs against the actual sample or label, keep units consistent and round only the final count or purchase. Repeat a sample if a small measuring difference changes the decision.
- These arithmetic examples assume the measured structure stays comparable. Shaping, borders, dense textures and color changes require their own allowances or samples.

Turn a measured swatch into stitch and row counts for your finished size.

Wash and rest a sample in the project’s stitch pattern. Count stitches and rows inside measured central spans, excluding edge distortion.  Positive ease adds room to the target width; negative ease subtracts it. The rounded result is a planning count; fit repeats and construction details before casting on.

Formula: stitches ÷ swatch width × target width after ease; rows ÷ swatch height × target height. Each result follows the selected up, down, or nearest rounding rule and its stitch or row multiple.
