## Before you start

Gather the measurements, counts or timing sample needed below. Record their units and whether they describe a sample, the whole project or one purchased package. Use a finished sample when dimensions or material use depend on fabric structure.

## How to do it

1. **Make a representative crochet swatch** — Sample the actual stitch pattern, working direction and finishing method. A plain-stitch square cannot establish the gauge of a textured or mesh project.
2. **Check crochet width and height separately** — Matching stitch gauge does not guarantee matching row gauge. Adjust hook and technique through samples, then follow any pattern provision for working to a measured length.
3. **Assess ease in crochet fabric** — Choose ease from the actual fabric’s stretch and the intended silhouette. Finished circumference is body measurement plus the chosen ease, not the size label.
4. **Read crochet garment construction** — Trace the work direction, panel boundaries and joining edges on the schematic. Size selection needs finished dimensions and ease as well as gauge.

## Try this example

A 96 cm body with 8 cm selected ease targets 104 cm. At 18 stitches per 10 cm this is about 187 stitches before construction and repeat adjustment; compare the pattern’s actual size options.

## Check your result

- Recheck the inputs against the actual sample or label, keep units consistent and round only the final count or purchase. Repeat a sample if a small measuring difference changes the decision.
- These arithmetic examples assume the measured structure stays comparable. Shaping, borders, dense textures and color changes require their own allowances or samples.

Wash and rest a sample in the project’s stitch pattern. Count stitches and rows inside measured central spans, excluding edge distortion.  Positive ease adds room to the target width; negative ease subtracts it. The rounded result is a planning count; fit repeats and construction details before casting on.

Formula: stitches ÷ swatch width × target width after ease; rows ÷ swatch height × target height. Each result follows the selected up, down, or nearest rounding rule and its stitch or row multiple.
