## Before you start

Gather the measurements, counts or timing sample needed below. Record their units and whether they describe a sample, the whole project or one purchased package. Use a finished sample when dimensions or material use depend on fabric structure.

## How to do it

1. **Plan a top-down crochet hat** — Use a reviewed crown construction and check finished circumference, depth and stretch separately. Crown diameter alone does not establish fit for every shape.
2. **Plan a flat crochet circle** — Use an increase schedule tested for the actual stitch height. A fixed number of increases is not universal across stitches, gauge and yarn.
3. **Diagnose cupping and ruffles** — Too little circumference can cup; excess circumference can ruffle. First check counts, stitch height and tension against the intended construction.
4. **Assess ease in crochet fabric** — Choose ease from the actual fabric’s stretch and the intended silhouette. Finished circumference is body measurement plus the chosen ease, not the size label.

## Try this example

A selected 52 cm finished circumference at 20 stitches per 10 cm targets 104 stitches. Choose a compatible crown count and confirm the brim passes comfortably before adding the full side depth.

## Check your result

- Recheck the inputs against the actual sample or label, keep units consistent and round only the final count or purchase. Repeat a sample if a small measuring difference changes the decision.
- These arithmetic examples assume the measured structure stays comparable. Shaping, borders, dense textures and color changes require their own allowances or samples.

Wash and rest a sample in the project’s stitch pattern. Count stitches and rows inside measured central spans, excluding edge distortion.  Positive ease adds room to the target width; negative ease subtracts it. The rounded result is a planning count; fit repeats and construction details before casting on.

Formula: stitches ÷ swatch width × target width after ease; rows ÷ swatch height × target height. Each result follows the selected up, down, or nearest rounding rule and its stitch or row multiple.
