## Before you start

Confirm whether the instructions use US or UK terms. On a smooth-yarn sample, mark the first and last stitch and note whether the turning chain counts.

## How to do it

1. **Shape square corners** — Corner groups redirect the edge and add the growth required by the pattern. Keep corner spaces distinct from ordinary side spaces.
2. **Investigate a twisting granny square** — Check equal side counts and corner placement first. Working direction and stitch lean can also affect rotation; compare a turned-round sample if the pattern permits.
3. **Budget crochet yarn by color** — Measure each color’s consumption in a representative motif or stripe, including carried yarn and ends. Round package quantities separately for each color.
4. **Add a border that lies flat** — Sample the border pickup rate along a straight edge and treat corners separately. Too many attachments can wave; too few can pull the edge inward.

## Try this example

Measure after rounds four, six and eight, keeping corner counts correct. Use the recent growth rate only as a local estimate and reserve separate yarn for the larger final rounds and border.

## Check your result

- Count stitch tops separately from chain spaces and compare successive row or round totals. Lay the sample down without stretching it to inspect the shape.
- A symbol or familiar stitch name does not supply a complete construction. Use the project’s own counts, turning rules and joining instructions.
