## Before you start

Gather the measurements, counts or timing sample needed below. Record their units and whether they describe a sample, the whole project or one purchased package. Use a finished sample when dimensions or material use depend on fabric structure.

## How to do it

1. **Measure a motif after blocking and joining** — Use the distance between corresponding points of joined motifs. An 11.5 cm loose square with a join adding 0.5 cm per repeat has a 12 cm pitch in this example.
2. **How many granny squares do you need?** — Turn a blocked, joined square measurement into rows, columns, and a separate spare count.
3. **Plan and join crochet motifs into a finished project** — Measure the joined repeat, plan rows and columns, arrange colour, and test a seam before assembling many motifs.
4. **Secure crochet ends and joins** — Route tails through compatible stitch paths without pulling the fabric tight. Test the fastening on the actual slippery, fuzzy or smooth yarn before trimming close.

## Try this example

A joined motif advances 10 cm; a four-by-four layout gives a 40 cm field with 16 motifs per face. Confirm closure and seam allowances before assuming two faces need exactly 32 motifs.

## Check your result

- Recheck the inputs against the actual sample or label, keep units consistent and round only the final count or purchase. Repeat a sample if a small measuring difference changes the decision.
- These arithmetic examples assume the measured structure stays comparable. Shaping, borders, dense textures and color changes require their own allowances or samples.

Turn a measured, joined motif repeat into rows, columns, and a make count for a rectangular project.

Join and finish several sample motifs before measuring the repeat pitch between matching points. Enter the motif field after subtracting borders.  Cover rounds up each axis; complete-only rounds down. Extra motifs are spares outside the layout.  Extra outer-edge allowance is added twice to each target dimension. Internal joins belong in the measured motif pitch.

Required field = target width/height + twice the outer-edge allowance. Divide each axis by the finished joined motif pitch, swapping axes when rotated. Cover rounds up; complete-only rounds down. Multiply rows by columns, then add the rounded-up spare percentage. This model covers aligned rectangular layouts.
