Secure unaffected stitches and identify the exact repair rectangle before releasing any column.

## Before you start

Stop and record the last correct reference point. Support loose loops or damaged ground before removing anything, and reproduce the fault on a spare sample if possible.

## How to do it

1. **Repair a miscrossed cable** — Confirm the wrong crossing against the chart before undoing it. Secure unaffected stitches; practice dropping and rebuilding the cable column on a separate sample.
2. **Place and use lifelines** — Thread a smooth lifeline through a verified row of live stitches without splitting the yarn. Record the completed chart row and leave markers usable.
3. **Recover dropped stitches and unpick errors** — Catch the lowest live loop before it runs farther. Rebuild ladder strands in row order; when unpicking, return the previous loop before releasing the current one.
4. **Balance lace increases and decreases** — Calculate each row’s net stitch change. Yarn-overs add stitches; decreases remove the number specified by their construction, which may exceed one.

## Try this example

On a practice cable, mark the miscrossed row and the columns it affects. Rehearse rebuilding that crossing with spare yarn; for complex lace, a known lifeline may provide a clearer recovery point.

## Check your result

- Compare the repaired area with an undamaged neighbor after relaxing or finishing the sample. Recount the boundary before continuing beyond the repair.
- A repair may remain visible. If the foundation is weak, reinforcing or replacing a section can be more reliable than hiding the surface fault.
