## Before you start

Use smooth, light yarn and a small sample that matches the lesson’s flat or circular construction. Mark the right side and record the starting stitch count. Follow the pattern’s own stitch key.

## How to do it

1. **Plan double knitting** — Track the two fabric layers and their edge connections. Distinguish a stitch pair serving both faces from one stitch counted on a single face.
2. **Reading knitting charts: rows, rounds, symbols, and repeats** — Find the start, direction, key, and repeat before turning a grid into knitted fabric.
3. **Plan reversible and shadow-knit designs** — Inspect both faces and the intended viewing angle. Shadow-knit effects depend on relief and row structure, so a flat color chart alone cannot verify the result.
4. **Combine component quantities without mixing colors** — Two parts using 120 m and 80 m of color A total 200 m before reserve. Color B uses 60 m separately. At 100 m per ball and 10% reserve, buy three A balls and one B ball.

## Try this example

A trial with 20 paired positions may hold 40 live loops in a two-layer method. Chart a small asymmetric mark and inspect its reverse before committing to lettering or a larger panel.

## Check your result

- Count live stitches, trace one column and inspect both faces. Compare the relaxed edge with the middle of the sample before repeating the operation on a project.
- Stitch names and mounts vary between knitting styles. Follow the required fabric structure and pattern key rather than assuming every front loop is the correct entry point.
