## Before you start

Use smooth, light yarn and a small sample that matches the lesson’s flat or circular construction. Mark the right side and record the starting stitch count. Follow the pattern’s own stitch key.

## How to do it

1. **Compare small-circumference methods** — Compare double-pointed needles, two circulars and a long-loop method using the same tube. Judge transitions and access, not just nominal needle length.
2. **Measure rib contraction and stretch** — Measure rib relaxed and under a defined gentle stretch. Use the state relevant to the finished opening, and check recovery after release.
3. **Choose a bind-off for the edge** — Match the bind-off to the opening’s stretch and the edge’s structure. A loose-looking bind-off is not automatically elastic or stable.
4. **Plan mitten-thumb placement** — Mark palm, back and thumb position on each mitten separately. Mirror placement deliberately while preserving the direction of any asymmetric motif.

## Try this example

For a wrist warmer, compare relaxed wrist fit with passage over the hand. Mark any thumb opening before knitting matching pieces and record the exact number of rounds for the pair.

## Check your result

- Count live stitches, trace one column and inspect both faces. Compare the relaxed edge with the middle of the sample before repeating the operation on a project.
- Stitch names and mounts vary between knitting styles. Follow the required fabric structure and pattern key rather than assuming every front loop is the correct entry point.
