## Before you start

Gather the measurements, counts or timing sample needed below. Record their units and whether they describe a sample, the whole project or one purchased package. Use a finished sample when dimensions or material use depend on fabric structure.

## How to do it

1. **Compare garter, seed and moss structures** — Compare the repeat structure, not just its name. Seed and moss terminology varies, so read how knit and purl positions change between rows.
2. **Fit stitch repeats between fixed edges** — A target of 102 stitches with an eight-stitch repeat and four fixed edge stitches fits 100 or 108 stitches. The fixed edges are counted once, outside the repeated area.
3. **When stitch gauge matches but row gauge differs** — Treat width and length separately. Straight lengths can often follow measured length, but armholes, shaping and vertical motifs still depend on row placement.
4. **Join edges with mattress-style seaming** — Join corresponding edge bars while keeping the seam allowance consistent. Tighten short sections gradually and preserve the fabric’s natural length.

## Try this example

A 40 cm target at 20 stitches per 10 cm gives 80 stitches. With an eight-stitch block, ten repeats fit before separate seam stitches; verify row-repeat height independently.

## Check your result

- Recheck the inputs against the actual sample or label, keep units consistent and round only the final count or purchase. Repeat a sample if a small measuring difference changes the decision.
- These arithmetic examples assume the measured structure stays comparable. Shaping, borders, dense textures and color changes require their own allowances or samples.

Find the nearest stitch counts that preserve a pattern repeat and edge stitches.

A repeat is the sequence worked again; edge stitches sit outside it. Enter the fixed edge count per side.  Compare the lower and higher valid totals with their predicted widths and deliberately select the fit you want. A valid multiple alone does not establish a comfortable size.

Fixed edge stitches are removed first; the remaining count is rounded down and up to complete repeats. The optional gauge converts both valid counts to finished measurements so their size difference is visible.
