## Before you start

Keep an offcut or finished sample containing every material and color used in the project. Read the care instructions for all components before testing a treatment.

## How to do it

1. **Prepare a materials and care record** — Record exact materials, shade and batch references, tested care and the location of spare thread. Distinguish label instructions from treatments actually tested.
2. **Store materials and finished work** — Store clean, fully dry work with its labels, away from strong light and persistent damp. Support heavy pieces rather than suspending them from narrow points.
3. **Test washing and drying first** — Test the complete intended treatment, including drying position. Measure the dry sample rather than assuming the wet shape will remain.
4. **Measure remaining material from a label** — For one uniform yarn, estimate length from net remaining mass and the original length-to-mass ratio. Remove packaging and keep uncertainty from scale resolution visible.

## Try this example

For a finished gift, include final dimensions, yarn or thread codes, the tested cleaning method and a small matching repair supply. Keep a copy of the record for later reference.

## Check your result

- Let the sample dry fully and return to room conditions before comparing shape, color and surface. Record the actual treatment so it can be repeated.
- A successful small test reduces uncertainty but does not guarantee an identical result on old, damaged or mixed-material work.
