## Before you start

Have the complete instructions, a short list of unfamiliar actions and the materials for a trial. Separate the trial from the final project.

## How to do it

1. **Record sample measurements and behavior** — Record numbers alongside the exact material, tool, stitch pattern and finishing method. Add observable behavior rather than only a gauge total.
2. **Work with mixed length units** — Convert each length into one working unit before adding or comparing it. Keep the source value and round only the final displayed result.
3. **Save, print and share working references** — Keep an editable project file separately from a printed chart. A calculator link preserves supported inputs; it is not a backup of your complete making notes.

## Try this example

A note saying “72 stitches” is incomplete. Record 18 stitches per 10 cm, a 40 cm target, zero added ease and the permitted repeat, then reopen any shared calculator state to verify it.

## Check your result

- Try the unfamiliar action before committing the main material. If the instructions leave a necessary choice unresolved, write down the missing information and resolve it first.
- A planning exercise is not a complete tested pattern. Project fit, construction and quantities still need their own instructions.

Turn a measured swatch into stitch and row counts for your finished size.

Wash and rest a sample in the project’s stitch pattern. Count stitches and rows inside measured central spans, excluding edge distortion.  Positive ease adds room to the target width; negative ease subtracts it. The rounded result is a planning count; fit repeats and construction details before casting on.

Formula: stitches ÷ swatch width × target width after ease; rows ÷ swatch height × target height. Each result follows the selected up, down, or nearest rounding rule and its stitch or row multiple.
