## Before you start

Keep the exact labels and make two comparable samples. Change one material property at a time and use the intended finishing method on both.

## How to do it

1. **Interpret care information** — Read temperature, agitation, drying and pressing instructions separately. The finished piece must accommodate its most treatment-sensitive component.
2. **Test washing and drying first** — Test the complete intended treatment, including drying position. Measure the dry sample rather than assuming the wet shape will remain.
3. **Measure blocking changes on both axes** — Record width and height independently before and after finishing. A sample can grow wider while becoming shorter.
4. **Prepare a materials and care record** — Record exact materials, shade and batch references, tested care and the location of spare thread. Distinguish label instructions from treatments actually tested.

## Try this example

Join a stretchy wool sample to a firm cotton sample using the intended seam. Wash and dry as permitted for both, then compare shrinkage and seam distortion before committing to the combination.

## Check your result

- Compare the dry samples for recovery, surface, drape and the property needed for the project. Record observations separately from label claims.
- A fiber name or category cannot predict every finished fabric. Construction, treatment, gauge and use all affect the result.
