Recover the original length before comparing replacement package weights.

## Before you start

Gather the measurements, counts or timing sample needed below. Record their units and whether they describe a sample, the whole project or one purchased package. Use a finished sample when dimensions or material use depend on fabric structure.

## How to do it

1. **Yarn label anatomy: turn symbols and numbers into decisions** — Use weight category, fibre, gauge, care, length, and dye lot as a project checklist rather than a promise.
2. **Measure remaining material from a label** — For one uniform yarn, estimate length from net remaining mass and the original length-to-mass ratio. Remove packaging and keep uncertainty from scale resolution visible.
3. **How much replacement yarn do two labels imply?** — Convert an original ball count into required length, then round replacement balls once.
4. **Make a representative finished swatch** — Use the project’s stitch pattern, working direction and finishing treatment. A smooth flat sample does not represent a textured circular garment.

## Try this example

An original 300 g requirement at 120 m per 50 g represents 720 m. A replacement at 150 m per 50 g needs five balls for 750 m, subject to gauge and reserve checks.

## Check your result

- Recheck the inputs against the actual sample or label, keep units consistent and round only the final count or purchase. Repeat a sample if a small measuring difference changes the decision.
- These arithmetic examples assume the measured structure stays comparable. Shaping, borders, dense textures and color changes require their own allowances or samples.

Turn required yarn length into whole substitute balls, total length, and weight.

Use the original total length, or original ball count × length per ball, then enter the replacement label length. Equal ball weights do not imply equal lengths.  Read quantity and suitability separately: enough yarn may still give the wrong fabric. Confirm washed gauge, drape and care before committing.

Required length plus allowance is divided by substitute length per ball and rounded up. Risk also reflects fiber, yarn structure, blocked gauge, weight category, care, and drape; unknown or different properties require a swatch before purchasing.
