Build an estimate from the intended fabric and dimensions instead of inventing the missing original quantity.

## Before you start

Gather the measurements, counts or timing sample needed below. Record their units and whether they describe a sample, the whole project or one purchased package. Use a finished sample when dimensions or material use depend on fabric structure.

## How to do it

1. **Make a representative finished swatch** — Use the project’s stitch pattern, working direction and finishing treatment. A smooth flat sample does not represent a textured circular garment.
2. **Estimate a rectangular project from a weighed sample** — A finished 10 × 10 cm sample weighing 5 g scales to 150 g for a 50 × 60 cm rectangle. With 10% reserve, plan 165 g before rounding packages.
3. **Combine component quantities without mixing colors** — Two parts using 120 m and 80 m of color A total 200 m before reserve. Color B uses 60 m separately. At 100 m per ball and 10% reserve, buy three A balls and one B ball.
4. **How many whole balls does a length requirement need?** — An 850 m requirement with 10% reserve needs 935 m. At 200 m per ball, round 4.675 up to five balls: 1,000 m in total.

## Try this example

A matching 10 × 10 cm sample uses 8 g; a 40 × 50 cm rectangle needs about 160 g before edges and reserve. Recheck the estimate if the construction contains shaping or denser panels.

## Check your result

- Recheck the inputs against the actual sample or label, keep units consistent and round only the final count or purchase. Repeat a sample if a small measuring difference changes the decision.
- These arithmetic examples assume the measured structure stays comparable. Shaping, borders, dense textures and color changes require their own allowances or samples.

Estimate yarn for a uniform flat piece from the area and weight of your own washed swatch.

Weigh a dry finished sample without needles, pins or attached extra yarn. Measure only the area represented by that mass.  Target width × height describes a rectangle in the same stitch pattern; sleeves, seams, borders and other structures need separate samples or component estimates.

The target area is divided by the swatch area, then multiplied by swatch weight and allowance. Label length and weight convert that estimate to yarn length and whole balls. A visible ±15% planning band shows sensitivity, not a statistical guarantee. Use only for similarly constructed rectangular fabric with matching stitch pattern, gauge, and density.
