## The parts have different jobs

The head catches yarn and draws it through a loop. The throat guides that yarn toward the shaft. The shaft’s diameter sizes the working loop, while the thumb rest and handle affect control rather than stitch size. A hook that is labelled with the same millimetre diameter can still feel different because the head, throat, surface, and grip geometry differ.

## Inline and tapered profiles

An inline hook keeps the head close to the shaft width and often has a deeper groove. A tapered hook narrows gradually toward a more protruding head. Neither form is universally better: yarn splitting, hand motion, stitch height, and grip determine which is comfortable. Steel hooks are made for fine thread and use a numbering system that runs in the opposite direction to many regular hook systems, so compare millimetres.

## Size follows the fabric

The yarn label and pattern suggest a starting diameter. Make a swatch in the actual stitch pattern. Change diameter if the measured gauge or fabric character is wrong; do not force your hand to imitate someone else’s tension.
