Filet cells share boundary posts. Translate the chart’s mesh convention into stitches before multiplying cells; do not count each shared post twice.

## Before you start

Confirm whether the instructions use US or UK terms. On a smooth-yarn sample, mark the first and last stitch and note whether the turning chain counts.

## How to do it

1. Try the four-post mesh convention using US double crochet: an open cell is 1 dc, chain 2, skip 2 base stitches, 1 dc. A filled cell replaces the two chains with 2 dc. Neighboring cells share the boundary dc.
2. Two adjacent open cells therefore use 7 positions: dc, chain 2, dc, chain 2, dc. Do not restart with another boundary post. Other filet conventions use different counts; match the legend before calculating a foundation.

## Try this example

In a chart using three stitch positions per cell plus one final boundary, ten cells span 31 positions. Verify whether open cells use two chains in that exact convention.

## Check your result

- Count stitch tops separately from chain spaces and compare successive row or round totals. Lay the sample down without stretching it to inspect the shape.
- A symbol or familiar stitch name does not supply a complete construction. Use the project’s own counts, turning rules and joining instructions.
