Post stitches pass around the body of a stitch rather than through its top loops. Front and back placement create different raised surfaces.

## Before you start

Confirm whether the instructions use US or UK terms. On a smooth-yarn sample, mark the first and last stitch and note whether the turning chain counts.

## How to do it

1. For a front-post US double crochet, yarn over and insert from front to back beside the post, then back to front on its other side. Catch yarn and draw it around the post; finish as double crochet, pulling through two loops twice.
2. For a back-post stitch, reverse that route: back to front, around the post, then to the back. Skip that stitch’s ordinary top unless the pattern says to work it too; working both adds a stitch.

## Try this example

Make a row of US double crochet, then sample two front-post and two back-post stitches repeatedly. Count the tops so you do not also work the displaced ordinary stitch.

## Check your result

- Count stitch tops separately from chain spaces and compare successive row or round totals. Lay the sample down without stretching it to inspect the shape.
- A symbol or familiar stitch name does not supply a complete construction. Use the project’s own counts, turning rules and joining instructions.
