Match the bind-off to the opening’s stretch and the edge’s structure. A loose-looking bind-off is not automatically elastic or stable.

## Before you start

Use smooth, light yarn and a small sample that matches the lesson’s flat or circular construction. Mark the right side and record the starting stitch count. Follow the pattern’s own stitch key.

## How to do it

1. For a basic knitted bind-off, knit two stitches. Lift the older stitch over the newer one and off the right needle: one loop remains.
2. Knit one more and pass the older loop over again. Continue to the last loop, cut a usable tail and draw it through. The edge must open to the required width without forcing; test a stretchier method if it stops the fabric opening.

## Try this example

Bind off half a rib sample normally and half with the pattern’s elastic method. Stretch to the required opening and compare recovery and flaring after release.

## Check your result

- Count live stitches, trace one column and inspect both faces. Compare the relaxed edge with the middle of the sample before repeating the operation on a project.
- Stitch names and mounts vary between knitting styles. Follow the required fabric structure and pattern key rather than assuming every front loop is the correct entry point.
